T here were glimpses into Partridge's home-life, via a phone call with stepdaughter Colby (presumably her parents were fans of Eighties soap Dynasty) and a brief appearance by girlfriend Angela (an understated turn from Monica Dolan), encouraging him to bond with her sons by shooting squirrels. "Do you think they'd like air rifles? " he replied excitedly. "Of course they would, they're from a broken home. " M eanwhile, Sidekick Simon (played with pathos by Tim Key) revealed how he'd recently tracked down his real mother. Naturally, Partridge wasn't really listening. These beautifully observed vignettes contrasted cleverly with Partridge's obsession with minutiae: talcum powder, Laser Quest, the fighting abilities of corgis, corner shops that unscrupulously sell multipack cans of fizzy drinks separately. Deep discussion: Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge in Mid Morning Matters T here were throwaway namechecks for Stephen Hawking, Mark Rylance and David Starkey ("a git of a guy"), plus an awkward moment when his secret sponsorship deal with Range Rover was exposed.

He's back: Steve Coogan as Norfolk radio DJ Alan Partridge Credit: Sky Atlantic "Jesus Christ. Margaret Thatcher. Denis Thatcher. Carol Thatcher. And… hmmm… Mark Thatcher. " Yes, Alan Partridge was back and listing his dream dinner party guests. Less of an eclectic line-up, more of a family kitchen supper with a couple of gatecrashers. W e rejoined Steve Coogan 's masterful comic creation for another delightfully low-key series of Mid-Morning Matters ( Sky Atlantic), styled in the form of webcam footage of his North Norfolk Digital radio show. It might be shot in a poky broom cupboard but its scope was wide - from hymns to historic sex offences to a heated debate about fox hunting. Describing the Countryside Alliance as "what the National Trust would be if it grew a pair". Partridge managed to upset both sides with typical lack of tact. His fawning in the presence of the upper classes recalled Basil Fawlty, while his pretensions to be a serious playwright were pure Ernie Wise. I'll be shuddering at the sex scene in his radio play for some time.
Throughout it all, our host kept coming back to Operation Yewtree and "disgraced knight of the realm" Sir Jimmy Savile. Perhaps it's only natural for a BBC alumnus of Partridge's vintage. Later in the series, incidentally, Alan confesses his own indiscretion: an underpant prank that made one of Pan's People cry. We've now followed Partridge's career trajectory from sports reporter to chat show host, then back down the ladder to local radio windbag. Viewed as a whole, it makes an admirably ambitious, endlessly creative and consistently hilarious body of work: three radio series, six TV series, a best-selling spoof memoir and a feature film, spread across 25 years. We should treasure him. But first, traffic and travel… Quiz: Who said it – Alan Partridge or Steve Coogan?
