It's a tapestry of fascinating scenes, characters, and places that are real enough to make you believe that a version of these events happened. Steve Buscemi gives a wonderfully restrained performance in a truly ensemble show. Jack Huston as Richard Harrow deserves to win all the awards. Best watched 3 at a time to make you get into the 20's swing of things. And I can't leave out Michael Williams as Chalky White... He plays Chalky with such a deep undercurrent of anger and makes you understand what it feels like to be an outsider wherever you go. Can't wait for season 4 to be available on Amazon Instant. Every subplot pays off. Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2013 Verified Purchase WARNING: SPOILER ALERT! I love this series, but I hate its main character. It's the same paradox I faced with The Sopranos: I enjoyed watching it, but I hoped Tony would get offed, along with his hypocrite wife, by the end of the run. Nucky is truly a human POS, and there was no way in hell that he needed to shoot the young guy who stole his liquor.

But this courtroom is not the place to do it. " Still, it's it's safe to say Randolph will figure again in the story line. She burns her independence by agreeing to a 5 a. m. meal with Nucky. Randolph hides behind language: does Nucky see himself as "a paterfamilias"? Randolph quotes a 15 th -century poet and calls herself, sarcastically, "all lace and potpouri. " But when Nucky asks for her help against Daugherty, whom she knows is corrupt, she doesn't say no. Instead, she asks a question: "Is this where Eve gets offered the apple? " Harrow seems to be the only one not setting his life afire. He feels enough confidence to show up at the American Legion, and he is restrained enough not to intervene in a fight between two other veterans. (But does anyone imagine that Harrow couldn't have taken either man? ) After the fight, Harrow meets Julia Sagorsky, the pretty and frank daughter of the older vet who lost the fight. She betrays no notice of his deformity—no false sympathy or disgust. He likes her and goes to visit.
If it wasn't for the fast forward button I wouldn't have made it through the full series. the writing is very poor and does not engage Although Steve Buscemi is very good when the story allows him. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2012 Verified Purchase HBO have done it again, having watched just about everything HBO - Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Mad Men, True Blood, Carnivale, Hung, and Six Feet Under, HBO have produced another superb series. The quality of acting, scripts, and sets is second to none, if you enjoyed the Sopranos you're pretty much certain to love Boardwalk Empire too. The free photo book with the dvd is very small and underwhelming, but the blu-ray itself is an easy 5* winner. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 March 2016 Verified Purchase A rather slow starter with not a lot to catch the imagination and Brits may take a little time to come to terms with the accents and language. However, stick with it: as the series goes on the characters flesh-out and the plot deepens. Although there are few characters to like or admire you will find yourself taking sides and becoming immersed in the culture of 1920's Atlantic City and environs. The violence can be extreme and the sex and nudity are fairly blatant but neither are out of place given the subject matter. If this were a book it would be hard to get into but after a few chapters even harder to put down. Beware, once into the subsequent seasons this soon becomes a case of "Binge Watching". Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2015 Verified Purchase Starts well and then grinds to a halt. Had no feelings for the characters, very slow as the whole story comes to a hlt to develop relationships rather than them being integrated into the story.
Macall B. Polay/HBO Spoiler alert: If you haven't seen "Ging Gang Goolie, " sit around a campfire and watch before reading on. Everyone's façade began to burn on last night's episode. The Thompson home (at least its greenhouse) literally burns, while Nucky finds no one but a goldfish to take his usual bribes. Gaston Means, Nucky's conduit for graft to Attorney General Harry Daugherty, seems to have disappeared. Both Means and Daugherty are hiding at a breakfast for Boy Scouts. But their corruption is catching up to aide Jesse Smith (an unscrupulous and tragic member of Daugherty's corrupt Justice Department). Smith, fat and sweaty, seems to be having a panic attack. He says: "How did we get this far? We stole, Harry. We stole. " Meantime, the Scouts begin to sing "Ging Gang Goolie, " an innocently boyish song. Another boy, Teddy, is figuring out that Nucky isn't much of a (step)father. Teddy asks his mother whether Sleater, who is probably not kinder than Nucky but who is certainly more present, could live in the house.
Michael Pitt takes on the role as Nucky's right hand man James "Jimmy" Darmody, Stephen Graham as Al Capone, and Kelly Macdonald stars as Nucky's on-screen love interest Margaret.
